Primary Education System in Ottoman Empire

Abstract
The education systems of states reflect their philosophy, policy, and life styles. The first stage of elementary education and teaching in the Ottoman Empire has been called as Sibyan Schools (Sibyan Mektepleri). The education system of Ottomans founded on Sibyan Schools. Sibyan Schools was the first and the last school for many Ottoman citizens. Therefore, the school which shaped a mentality of Ottomans was Sibyan School. Sibyan School, with its philosophy, policy, aims, content, method, teaching staff, administration, evaluation, and including originalities worth exploring, is a unique type of Ottoman School. Quran recitation was compulsory in these schools. Religious matters, learning how to write dealing with basic arithmetics were the majör endeavour in these schools.
